In response to teacher feedback received last year, the ACTF has developed writing rubrics to support students entering the 2022 My Place Competition.
Drawing on themes in the picture book and television series that followed, this year’s My Place Competition asks students to write about change and continuity in their own communities. After reflecting on their local history, students will select a suitable form for the story they want to tell, then compose a creative entry which meets competition guidelines.
To support participating students and the teachers or parents guiding them, the ACTF recently worked with author and literacy consultant Lisa Keskinen to develop two writing rubrics – one for Years 1-4, and one for Years 5-8. Both rubrics provide guidance on meaning and structure, creativity, language use and conventions. The rubrics, along with an explanatory document, are now available to download from the 2022 My Place Competition page as an additional classroom resource.
Reflecting on the purpose of the rubrics, Lisa Keskinen – a former judge in the competition – said: "I am inspired by the strengths, creativity, and potential of young writers. I created the writing competition rubrics, carefully crafting them to allow for different text types and styles. The aim was to provide entrants with an idea of what we are looking for in the writing. A helpful guide, not rigid directions. We are looking for creative, original writing with a strong style and voice. Best wishes to all entrants. Let your creativity and original voices shine!"
We hope that these rubrics are a helpful resource for participating schools, particularly in the editing and revising process. Teachers, we welcome feedback on all ACTF resources and events.
